人々を魅了するマジック。なぜ人は、消えていないコインを消えたと考え、全く同じ色を違う色だと認識してしまうのか？
マジックが成立する背景にある、人の脳の秘密に迫る。
人の神経は一秒間に1100万もの情報を五感で知覚しているという。その情報を処理可能な範囲に取捨選択し、無意識に「予測」している。この予測によって錯覚が引き起こされる。番組ではさまざまなマジックを楽しみながら脳の謎に迫る。
思考と行動の相互関係をテニスでボールを打ち返す様子で見てみよう。
「ボールを打ち返す」と考える数ミリ秒前に我々の脳はすでにこの動作を始動するという選択をしているのだ。脳はボールの行き先を先読みして、ボールと行動とのタイムラグをなくすことをやっているのだ。
五感がまったく感じられない真っ暗な無響室の中に入れられた時に、人間の脳はどうなるのか。
無響室の中にいると方向感覚を喪失させるだけでなく、時間が経過していくと視覚的・聴覚的な幻覚を経験することになるのだという。体験した女性レポーターは滞在時間約5分しか正常にその場に居続けることができなかった。
