designboom: how does your interior world affect or influence the way you see the outer world as you photograph? how do you focus in order to detect the details you want to capture?
steve mccurry: there’s a contemplative or meditative quality to photography, which I find to be a sort of peaceful state. when I’m walking around photographing, I get into a particular mindset where I become much more attuned to the world around me. It’s a joy to be alive, and maybe that’s what comes through. when I am walking around, I am present in the moment. when I am photographing, that is the zone I am in. I look at my surroundings and see what is different and special about the place. I want to examine, explore and see what stands out; it doesn’t always have to be human. It can be a crack on the sidewalk or an animal playing. It’s the appreciation for that moment in time and appreciation for the planet.

この写真は、1985年6月に『ナショナルジオグラフィック』の表紙として初めて世に登場した。シャーバート・グーラが生活する難民キャンプに足を踏み入れたとき、スティーブ・マッカリー（1950～）は、このとき撮影した写真が史上最も有名な肖像写真のほとつになるとは思いもしていなかった。
シャーバートの両親は、ソ連とのアフガニスタン紛争ですでに亡くなっていた。エキゾチックでありながら、ヨーロッパ的な理想美にも見合った彼女の顔立ちのおかげか、西欧人の中には、知りもしない土地に自分たち固有の世界観を投影させ、そこに普遍性を抱く人もいた。複雑な事情だらけであるはずのアフガニスタン側も、画像がこのような見られ方をしたことで世に知られ、子供のように無垢な存在になれたのだ。
この写真は、画像やその中で語られる感情に心動かされたなら、問題を正確に理解し、他人と通じ合えたも同然だという考え方を戒める役割を果たしている。シャーバートの置かれた状況に、この写真が手助けできたことは何もなかった。彼女の名前も、2002年にマッカリーがシャーバートを見つけ出してようやく世間に知られるようになった。
